Renaming and the Affirmation of True Self

If you’re transitioning to a new name, reclaiming your identity after a divorce, embracing a new cultural name, or marking a significant milestone, a renaming ceremony is a wonderful way to symbolize your empowerment and self-discovery. The ceremony is included in the Book of Occasional Services 2018. The Service of Renaming is intended for “when an event or experience leads a baptized person to take or be given a new name. … This new beginning is distinct from the new life begun in Holy Baptism.”

Renaming and affirming one’s true self sanctifies what has often been ridiculed and shamed. For instance, a trans person’s identity is central to who they are, connecting to the divine image within us and our identity. Naming is incredibly special; having your name accepted and revered reinforces its holiness in God’s eyes.
